For the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the establishment of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation in August this year was yet another milestone in enhancing Singapore’s status as an international shipping hub.
Dr. Sanjay C Kuttan is the Chief Technology Officer at the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation.
At GCMD, he oversees maritime-related decarbonisation initiatives covering both studies and pilots to close technical and operational gaps. These initiatives are titled enabling ammonia as a marine fuel, developing an assurance framework for drop-in green fuels, unlocking the carbon value chain and accelerating the adoption of energy efficiency technologies. To date, GCMD is working with more than 100 centre- and project-level partners to execute various studies and pilots under these initiatives.
Prior to joining GCMD, he was the Executive Director of the Singapore Maritime Institute, which is responsible for funding maritime research projects with industry and building local capabilities in the maritime sector, an appointment after 2 years as a Programme Director at the Energy Research Institute at the Nanyang Technological University. This followed his 5 years with DNV as Managing Director of the Clean Technology Centre.
Prior to DNV, Sanjay worked at the Energy Market Authority (EMA), as Director of Industry Development and was in charge of key clean technology projects embarked on by the Authority i.e., the Electric Vehicle Test bed and the Pulau Ubin Renewable energy project. He also has rich management experience in the private sector with ExxonMobil for 12 years, and with McKinsey for 5 years.
Sanjay is a member of the Chemical Standards Committee Singapore Standards Council of Enterprise Singapore, a statutory board under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI); a council member of the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore; and a member of MTI’s Pro-Enterprise Panel. He also sits on the Advisory Board for Qi Square, Beep Technologies and Motion Ventures. He obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the National University of Singapore.
