Issue 16 . Jun 2022
This issue of Trade Finance Talks highlights the global food crisis exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine and other disruptions. The conflict has disrupted global supply chains, particularly for food products, causing new logjams and port blockages. Beyond Ukraine, the Horn of Africa faces its own challenges, with locust swarms devastating crops and increasing reliance on unstable international markets. Countries like Somalia, which previously imported most of its wheat from Russia and Ukraine, are now on the brink of starvation. The issue highlights the fragility of global food systems and the potential for worsening conditions as major producers may restrict exports to protect their own supplies. It emphasises the need for trade finance and multilateral intervention to prevent further crises. Additionally, the issue explores other macroeconomic factors impacting trade finance, including rising inflation, declining correspondent banking, shifts in green energy demands, and advancements in the digital trade agenda.
