Export Week: 100,000 exporters by 2020

David Coppock at Export Week
The government’s most ambitious export initiative to date launched this week in the North East, as park of Export Week. Exporting is GREAT was launched this week in Gateshead, aiming to inspire and support 100,000 additional exporters by 2020, which has a potential total value of more than £300 million (source: UKTI Performance and Impact Monitoring Surveys).

We spoke to David Coppock, UKTI North East Regional Director about why exporting is so important in the North East.

What are the biggest challenges for the UK export economy and community?

“For many companies the biggest challenge is identifying which markets best fit with their goods and services. After that it is usually about practical things such as cultural differences in business practice, legal frameworks and or terms of trade, finance and insurance. In the North East we have 20 trained and experienced International Trade Advisers who can help from the first steps – a Passport to Export programme and some Market Research, for example, right through Market visits and specialised introduction services.”

What is the North East doing to encourage businesses to export?

“Our International Trade Advisers spend a lot of time with individual companies finding the right UKTI products to help them reach new markets. Market research can help identify which parts of the world have an interest in goods and services from different sectors. Events such as Explore Export – where over 50 representatives from across the world sat down and had one to one meetings with businesses – also help.

The North East is leading the Government’s Northern Powerhouse agenda for the Energy sector so there is a focus on overseas visits looking at renewables, oil and gas, nuclear and other energy technologies and how North East expertise can be sold around the world.”

How is UKTI helping businesses succeed with exporters in the North East?

Lord Maude
“The North East is the only region in the UK with a consistent positive balance of trade. This is one of the reasons the region was chosen to launch the new flagship ‘Exporting is GREAT’ campaign – which offers real time, live business opportunities through broadcast and online channels. In his launch speech, Lord Maude, commented that he wanted to make ‘Britain the greatest exporting nation in the world’. UKTI North East offers a range of products from market research and export insight to overseas market visits and introduction services.”

What are you most excited about / looking forward to see at Export Week?

“Export Week is great because it helps businesses focus on what they want to get out from exporting. We know from companies that we’ve already worked with that businesses which export benefit at home from increased confidence, higher turnover, increased employment and apprenticeship opportunities and often greater creativity too.

Export Week also gets many of the North East’s key business players – North East and Tees Valley Local Enterprise Partnerships, North East Chamber of Commerce, CBI, FSB, for starters – together to share experiences and offer support and encouragement. The most exciting thing about Export Week won’t be seen for a while – and that’s the number of companies who take their first successful steps on export journeys as a result of their involvement in the week.”
