What is Trade Finance?

Export finance is a facility which expert lenders offer – it enables companies to buy products and ease cash flow. Typically, a trade financier will fund up to 100% of the cost of the products, including charges (e.g. insurance costs).

Trade finance offers advantages over more traditional working capital finance such as loans which require security and invoice discounting. Trade finance provides up front funding quickly without affecting existing bank relationships, without affecting the balance sheet.

If you’re a London based firm who might want to pay an exporter upfront, a trade finance expert provides a Letter of Credit which guarantees payment upon transportation of the products to the exporter through a commercial lender in his or her home country. Trade finance enables companies quick access to export finance with hardly any risk, as the security is guaranteed through the trade finance provider which secures finance against the goods themselves.
